Matthew Martin 

Matthew Martin was born in 1976 and read music at Magdalen College, Oxford where he was organ scholar. He then went on to the Royal Academy of Music, London as a post-graduate student and subsequently continued his studies in Paris with Marie-Claire Alain. He was recently elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music and is a teacher of keyboard skills and organ improvisation there.

In 2000 Matthew was appointed Organist and Choirmaster at the University Church of St Mary the Virgin and Assistant Organist at New College, Oxford before moving to Canterbury Cathedral in 2002. Since 2004 he has been Assistant Master of Music at Westminster Cathedral where he acts as an accompanist for broadcasts, tours and recordings, gives regular organ recitals and frequently directs the choir. During his time as Acting Master of Music, he directed a rare and highly acclaimed recording for Hyperion of Victoria’s Missa Gaudeamus with the cathedral Lay Clerks. Matthew is becoming increasingly well known as a composer of fresh and vibrant choral music, and his works are performed and broadcast by many renowned choral groups including The Cardinall’s Musick and BBC Singers. Recent commissions have come from the choirs of Westminster Abbey, Ampleforth Abbey and St Paul’s Cathedral, and he is currently published by Faber Music.

In 2006, Matthew took up the position of director of the Nave Choir at Edington, having previously been the Festival Organist.
